Leather to paper
for
flute solo
Barbara Simeoni, flute
"Leather to paper is based on a story my grandmother used to tell me. She fled Finland during the second world war and came to Sweden. There were many Finnish children who fled during the war, mostly by boat. Every child was sent in their finest clothes to impress their new families when they arrived in Sweden, but on the dock in Finland they told all the kids to swap their leather shoes for paper ones. This piece uses mostly the emotional trajectory of my grandmother as a scared 4-5 year old being sent to a new country to the 80 year old telling me the story, who was still quite upset about her shoes."

Metamorfosar
for
flute solo
Andriana Malliou - Ανδριάνα Μάλλιου, flute
"Metamorfosar is a quiet and empty piece for solo flute. It's based on blocks of material that is put in repeating sequences, sort of like a poem. The blocks influence each other, so that when things are repeated they are changed by what has happened in between the repetitions. The sound world of the piece is surrounded around breathy sounds, fast trills and sometimes the flutist and the flute is doing different blocks at the same time. The most important part of the piece - and what has given it it's title - is the changes, or transformations, between the blocks"

Rugged
for
flute solo
Kärt Katriin Nagel, flute
"From threads to art, the life of a carpet is intense. It’s in every house, school, church, bathroom, being stepped on and ignored. At the same time people collect, admire and respect them. A play on the word, as well as the toughness of a carpet. Rugged."

The monologue of one bird
for
alto flute solo
Spyridoula Kontovagiou –
Σπυριδούλα Κοντοβάγιου,
alto flute
"The main thematic idea of the piece is inspired by nature and specifically from birds singing. In part A the F major shows the joyful and playful character of the bird, as well the start of the day. On the contrary , in part B the A minor is used to reflect the disturbance and shock of the bird because, as the day comes to an end, it has to find a shelter in order to be safe. As the piece is closing ,the bird finds shelter and finishes it’s song."

Άνεμος και Χορός –
Wind and dance
for
two flutes
Maddalena Nompleggio
Francesco Palladino,
flutes
"This piece was inspired by the sounds one can be able to hear in the wind if we pay attention to them. The title, Άνεμος και Χορός, is Greek for Wind and Dance. It is divided into two sections. The first one explores the pitches and colours that can be present when we listen to the wind or any other airflow. For the second one I took inspiration from the traditional Kalamatianos Greek dance in order to bring contrast and evocate the character of Greek culture and festivities."
Antonia Kadi – Αντωνία Καδή
Tom and Jerry
for
two flutes
Annachiara Aiello Blasi
Aurora Lullianella,
flutes
"I started writing Tom and Jerry influenced by the cartoon. All techniques represent something. Air sound is the Tom’s attempt to catch Jerry, and the tongue ram is the different obstacles he finds continually in this effort and the opposite when we hear it from Jerry. The keyclicks are the objects he throws at Jerry so he can immobilize him, as well as flutter tongue is when Tom gets angry that he can’t catch Jerry. Pizzicato is Jerry’s technique as he tries to escape from Tom. Both have the techniques of chromatic glissando and jet whistle. The glissandos are the tricks they manage to pull off on each other and the jet whistle is shown when they try to imitate each other and sometimes they do it at the same time."

Breath
for
two flutes
Christina Dima – Χριστίνα Δήμα
Afroditi Paggoura - Αφροδίτη Παγγούρα,
flutes
"To play the flute is a miraculous thing. Out of the air in their body and through the mechanics of their instrument the flutist manages to create an invisible canvas that we can yet all see within our minds’ eye. That air, that breath, is the subject of this piece. It explores the many transformations the breath can take, from calm to agitated, and from literal to metaphorical. The piece Breath is the result of a workshop with Afroditi Pangoura and Christina Dima, and without them this piece would not exist. I am to them eternally grateful."
Souzana Sotiri – Σουζάνα Σωτήρη
Whispers in the breeze
for
two flutes
Karmen Palusoo
Chiara di Cesare,
flutes
"Whispers in the breeze is a piece about all the sounds we hear around us when we walk, talk, hang around with friends and every other situation we live in. It’s a piece that brings all of those sounds in front of us. Even when we are alone, all of this background music is there."

Faintly, yet
for
flute and electronics
Annachiara Aiello Blasi, flute
"Faintly, yet is a piece for flute and electronics that plays with the fragility of sound—its decay, its presence in air, and the subtle world of micro-sound. Much like the visible trace of birdsong on a cold morning, the music hovers at the edge of perception, inviting close and attentive listening. Developed during the Euterpe Erasmus project, it was a pleasure to workshop the piece in collaboration with inspiring teachers and performers."

Resonance of Nature
for
flute and electronics
Otto Nõmm, flute
"Resonance of Nature is a piece about sounds that you would hear in nature. The flute imitates elements such as birdsong, fluttering wings, flowing water, and the hum of insects, while the electronics imitates snapping twigs, clinking stones, and distant rustles in the forest. Together, they create a mix of sounds that shows how nature can be calm, but intense, and full of details".

Sonatina
for
flute and piano
Martina D´ Aluisio, flute
Jana Peäske, piano
"Sonatina for flute and piano is an homage to the classical flute repertoire—sonatas and sonatinas for flute. This piece is full of internal movement and is built around polyphony. It conveys a sonata form from a different perspective, as the times are moving past the classical form."
Leon Pascal Bendlin
Reciprocity
for
flute and piano
Vilte Bagdziute, flute
Jana Peäske, piano
"Reciprocity explores timbral evolution, and fluctuations in time, rhythmically deconstructed. Reciprocity as a concept deals with relationships and conversations, therefore this piece reflects one of many conversations, with varying degrees or reciprocation between the parties. In Reciprocity the listener is also brought along on my journey as a freshly emerging, everlearning contemporary composer and explorer."

Snowdrop
for
flute and piano
Christos Pilos – Χρήστος Πηλός, flute
Jana Peäske, piano
"Snowdrop is a lyrical and evocative composition for flute and piano that captures the first moments of spring – the time when the first snowdrops begin to peek out from beneath the snow. The piece opens with a gentle and quiet soundscape, reminiscent of melting frost or the first rays of sunlight on snow. Flowing flute melodies and soft, harmonious piano accompaniment create an image of awakening nature, where every note carries a sense of new life and hope. Snowdrop is a delicate yet vibrant musical journey into the birth of spring."
